About the Race

The Short Pump Mile is the largest timed youth road race in Richmond, attracting over 1,300 runners in recent years. This event, started in 2009, is organized by NOVA of Virginia Aquatics, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The event promotes fitness, camaraderie, school pride, family fun, and community involvement.

Why would a swim club create a running race, you may ask? The answer is that NOVA is all about creating not only great swimmers, but also great kids. We focus on healthy habits for kids – being active, enjoying sports, and building a sense of community. The Short Pump Races are a great fit for these goals!

And, all of the proceeds of the event support community outreach efforts, which also support healthy kids. Almost $25,000 in cash awards have been given out to area schools’ physical education departments since the race started. Remaining proceeds benefit a variety of other NOVA outreach efforts, including offering scholarships to deserving swimmers, subsidizing the cost of learn-to-swim lessons, and supporting partnerships with other area non-profit organizations and schools.

You can feel good about your family’s participation in the race, knowing that your involvement helps our community!
